Call for Submissions to the 3rd CSE Annual Conference, Aug. 10-12, 2026, Windsor, Canada
It is our great honor to host the 3rd Chinese Society for Education Annual Conference (CSE 2026) by The University of Windsor Faculty of Education on August 10-12, 2026, themed on “West-East Reciprocal Learning for a More Inclusive World: Global Perspectives, Local Practices” and cohosted by Columbia University Center on Chinese Education, Education University of Hong Kong, Nanjing University Institute of Education, Tsinghua University School of Education, University of Western Ontario Faculty of Education and Yunnan Normal University Future Education Institute. We cordially invite you to submit a proposal around the conference theme, especially aligned with its seven sub-themes. In an era of interconnected challenges and shared aspirations – from climate crises to technological disruption (GenAI) – education serves as a powerful nexus for global dialogue and local transformation. Amidst rising geopolitical tensions and divides, the imperative for West-East reciprocal learning in Education between the West and East has reached unprecedented urgency. This conference invites educators, researchers, and practitioners in the field of Chinese education and/or international education to explore how interdisciplinary and cross-border collaboration can foster mutual understanding, inclusion, and sustainable development and thus to redefine the future of more inclusive education—both in China and worldwide. By fostering reciprocal learning between the West and East, as well as across diverse cultures and educational systems, especially in teacher education and school education, we aim to cultivate innovative solutions grounded in global perspectives and actionable at local levels, creating a dynamic platform for dialogue, reflection, and transformation. The Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor has introduced a new course in its latest teacher education curriculum reform: Interdisciplinary Education for Sustainability. This course engages teacher candidates in school-based and community-oriented activities in promoting ecological civilization. It integrates diverse ways of knowing and being in addressing UNESCO’s calls for the integration of Sustainability Education in initial teacher education. Rooted in the dynamic interplay of scholarship, practice, and partnership for West-East reciprocal learning in education, this theme underscores the imperative of integrating diverse perspectives to tackle complex educational issues. We seek to advance cutting-edge research, culturally responsive learning and teaching, and equitable collaborations that transcend geographical, disciplinary, and institutional divides. By uniting diverse voices—from policymakers to classroom teachers—we aim to turn dialogue into action, ensuring education remains a cornerstone of peace, inclusion, and human flourishing in an uncertain world. The University of Windsor is situated on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations—Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi—who are part of the larger Anishinaabe peoples of Turtle Island (colonially known as North America). Among the Anishinaabe, there is an ancient teaching known as the 8th Fire Prophecy, which speaks of a time when “They will come to a fork in the road. One road will lead to materialism and destruction…for almost all living creatures…The other road will lead to a Spiritual way upon which the Native People will be standing…This path will lead to the lighting of the 8th Fire, a period of eternal peace, harmony, and a New Earth where the destruction of the past will be healed”. The 8th Fire prophecy teaches that for the 8th Fire to be lit, peoples from the four directions—Yellow/East, Red/South, Black/West, and White/North—each entrusted with unique gifts and responsibilities essential to the balance of life on Mother Earth, will be brought together by relatives from the Red/South, to find ways for a new humanity to be formed. In this teaching, people from the Yellow/East hold the gifts of emotion and air; from the Red/South, the gifts of spirit and Earth; from the Black/West, the gifts of body and water; and from the White/North, the gifts of mind and fire. The well-being of our shared home depends on all honoring their gifts, fulfilling their responsibilities, and uniting in peace and harmony. This sacred teaching offers a profound, holistic model for West-East reciprocal learning in education—reminding us that, just as each direction contributes a vital element to the whole, each cultural tradition brings indispensable wisdom from Indigenous ways of knowing and the 8th fire for the flourishing of all. We are grateful to have this dialogue hosted on Indigenous lands and waters, the homeland of our Anishinaabe relatives. To better understand the key words of “the 8th fire” and “West-East reciprocal learning”, please refer to the following sources: Seven Fire Foundation.
